I’m reading a short story collection by a Singaporean author called ‘Ministry of Moral Panic’. I’ll leave you with the first lines of the next story I will be reading. The story is ‘Fourteen Entries from the Diary of Maria Hertogh’
I am only thirteen but I would like to tell you something: there is something far worse than not being loved by anybody, and that is being loved by everybody.
Also, the first line of the last story I loved from this collection titled ‘Love is no big truth’
There is no such thing in the world, as I cannot live without you; you cannot live without me. The earth spins. Time passes. Rice is eaten. What is there to disapprove?

I really liked the first line in the last story. There is so much truth in it.

It is a great excerpt and a book I’ve never seen before. Thanks for sharing.

Both of those first lines could almost stand alone as quotations. Are the stories as full of depth and meaning? Amazing.

Hi Violet,
I’m not much of one for reading short stories, however I do agree that both those quotes work well as stand alone thoughts about real life.
Life just seems so fast paced and uncaring of personal circumstances in today’s modern world, that it is almost a mistake to get too close to someone, as you inevitably end up by having to be self sufficient and a lone survivor at some point and unless you are prepared and able to cope, it will be all to easy to sink into oblivion.
Thanks for sharing and I hope that you enjoy the rest of the book 🙂

What great lines! I’m normally not much of a short-story reader but I need to know more about Maria Hertogh!

I haven’t heard of this author but I love both the quotes you shared! The second one especially has so much truth in it. I’m going to have to look for this collection. It’s been too long since I’ve read a really good short story collection.
