So what are some of your favorite movie adaptations of books?
The first adaptation that comes to my mind is The Memoirs of a Geisha. I read the book first and I loved it. The best part about the book, I thought, was the plot and the characters. I remember walking down the street from the company bus to my house with the book in my hand. I just couldn’t stop reading it. It was that engrossing. When I got a CD of the movie, I wasn’t really keen on watching it. And the funny part is I learnt about the book after learning about the movie. Wasn’t it nominated for the Oscars or something?
But I needn’t have worried. I loved the movie as well. It had preserved the essence of the book. The best part about the movie was the background music I know, I know. I also loved watching Japan and the sets and it was even prettier than what I had imagined while reading the book. And the main character, Sayuri, was so pretty, both the young girl and the adult. Just the way it was described in the book. Read the book and watch the movie. Both will be worth your time.
How about Anne of Green Gables starring Megan Follows? When I read the book I thought no one can play Anne well. Absolutely no body. I saw the movie poster with Megan Flower and I thought, ‘This isn’t how I imagined her’. I was sure I was going to be disappointed. But I was wrong. There is no one who could have played Anne Shirley so well. You can actually see her grow and change throughout the movie. I haven’t seen the other adaptations, but I loved this one.
Ummm…what else? Pride and Prejudice? Starring Kiera Knightly. Although I loved the book more, I like the movie too. It was very well done. I and my younger sis have watched the movie many times and she wants to read the book after watching the movie. Not bad huh?
I can say Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia but I haven’t read the books yet, so I really can’t say. Another movie I’m looking forward to is The Time Traveler’s Wife. I love Rachel McAdams and I’m so glad she’s playing Claire.
Oh and by the way, I hated Twilight. It was well made and all but it lacked something. It did not capture the essence of the book. And I don’t like their choice of Edward. Sorry Robert, nothing against you.
What according to you are the best or even the worst movie adaptations? Are you looking forward to any?
Oh, I enjoyed watching Memoirs of a Geisha! It was a great show IMO. I’m glad I read the book first before the film is out.
Ooh, I loved Memoirs of a Geisha, the book, but hated the film. I thought it missed too much out from the book … too much that was important.
I do have to say, I really enjoyed the recent Pride and Prejudice adaptation too though
Oh I know, but I have come to terms with the fact that everything cannot be covered in a movie and besides my memory isn’t so sharp, so I probably won’t remember much from the book after some time
I’ve only seen P&P! but I’ve read all those. huh. good post. I love books to movies! I just realized (ok, sorry to ramble and go somewhat off topic) that I hate to know anything when I read a book but I love love and must know what’s to happen in my movies. is this odd?
I hate to know what’s going to happen in a movie or a book, but I do like to know the overall plot without spoliers.
And I don’t think thats odd, I know a couple of people like that
I agree with Anne of Green Gables. It’s one of the best adaptions IMO.
I’m looking forward to Time Traveler’s Wife too.
Awesome question! I definitely liked the P&P remake with Kiera Knightly. One movie I liked better than the book was Perfume. I read the book after watching the movie and was really disappointed.
I am excited to see The Time Traveller’s Wife as well! I like Eric Bana as Henry, but he’s not what I saw him as in my head– maybe more of a Faraday from LOST.
Eric Bana was exactly what I pictured Henry to be, though I won’t mind Faraday as well
I hope the movie is good considering how excited we all are about it
I haven’t watched any of those yet, but I love Anne to bits and so I’m happy to hear she was played well
Oh you should try watching Anne of Green Gables, I’m sure you would like it.
I loved Memoirs of a Geisha and agree it was a great adaptation. I’m really looking forward to The Time Traveller’s Wife – even the trailer made me cry!
Me too. I’m guessing I’ll have to take a lot of tissues to the theatre
I loved the Little Women movie, with Winona Rider, Claire Danes, and Kirsten Dundst.
I haven’t read Little Woman but I have seen a little of the movie and liked what i saw. I’m actually waiting to read the book before I watch the movie.
My faves are Memoirs of a Geisha, Pride & Prejudice, The Notebook, To Kill a Mockingbird, Angela’s Ashes, and The Shawshank Redemption.
I have Angela’s Ashes in my TBR and I’m planning to read it before the movie. I probably wont feel like reading the book after watching the movie.
I like P&P’s adaptation. I haven’t read or watched Memoirs of a Geisha.
I LOOOOOOVE Anne. I actually like the movies better than the book, but maybe its because I saw the movies so many times when I was little and tried to read the book when I was 20 or so. I recently just picked up the mini-series on DVD and can’t wait to watch them.
Ah yes, the mini series. My younger sis saw it somewhere and now she wants that mini-series too. I read the book around a year back for the first time and saw the movie a few months later. I’m glad I love both.
You know hoe much i loved Memoirs of Geisha. I m hunting for the movie
I have to read Anne of Green Gables.
Harry Potter- i love!
I also liked Da Vinci Code. though there are a lot of differences.
then… i have to watch Twilight… OMG!!!! i thought i was the only person who didn’t like the choice of Edward… but now there is you!
Just imagine I read it twice. While I am not as skilled on this subject, I tally with your closings because they make sense. Gives Thanks and goodluck to you.
